晚唐诗人韦庄常在诗歌中用到这个词，如《菩萨蛮》里的“遇酒且呵呵，人生能几何”和《天仙子》里的“惊睡觉，笑呵呵，长道人生能几何”，这两句里的“呵呵”都表示笑声，映照了一种“得过且过”的心态和“对酒当歌，人生几何”的消极思想，既嘲讽世事，又颇感无奈。

从译文中可以看出，很难给“呵呵”找到一个完全对应的英文表达，大多数的翻译会采用音译，或者直接省略，用laugh、smile、beam、chuckle这些动词来表述。
那么，外国人在日常交际中是如何表达“呵呵”的呢？
